Landing in Seoul for the first time can feel overwhelming. After a long flight, the last thing most travelers want is to struggle with transportation.
Fortunately, getting from Incheon International Airport into the city is actually very straightforward once you understand the basics.
Seoul has one of the best public transportation systems in the world, and most travelers can reach popular neighborhoods quickly using the airport train and subway.
This guide will walk you through the easiest routes to five of the most common tourist destinations in Seoul - Hongdae, Myeongdong, Itaewon, Dongdaemun, and Gangnam.
When leaving Incheon International Airport, travelers usually choose between three options:
The AREX connects the airport directly to central Seoul.
There are two types of trains:
AREX All-Stop Train
For most visitors, the All-Stop Train is the best choice.
Typical travel time into the city:
45–60 minutes
Cost:
About 4,500–5,000 KRW
Airport buses run directly to many hotel districts.
I have taken the airport limousine several times. They usually have wifi and a USB port for charging your phone.
You can easily purchase a ticket at the airport from a kiosk with multiple language options or from a ticket sales counter.
Keep in mind that the kiosk may decline a non-Korean bank card, so if that happens to you, try the sales counter.
Advantages:
Typical cost:
15,000–18,000 KRW
Travel time:
60–90 minutes depending on traffic.
Taxis are the most comfortable option but also the most expensive.
Over the years, it's become much easier to hail a cab through an app as a foreigner.
You can use an app like k.ride and UT (Uber Taxi).
Typical fare to central Seoul:
70,000–100,000 KRW
Travel time:
60–80 minutes depending on traffic.
Some tips for taking taxis:
You're not required to tip. If they ask for a tip, they are scamming you. (It happened to me my first time in Korea!)
Black taxis cost more than others.

I recommend checking out the famous street food and various restaurants.

Itaewon is known for international restaurants, nightlife, and a large expat community.

While the train is usually fastest, airport buses can be a great option if:
Many buses stop near major hotel areas, which can make arrival much easier after a long flight, but if you're staying in an Airbnb up a big hill about a 10 minute hike from the station, maybe take a taxi.
A few small things can make navigating Seoul much easier.
Download navigation apps like Naver Map or Google Maps before arriving. These apps provide accurate subway routes and travel times.
Buying a T-money transit card at the airport convenience stores will also save time when entering subway stations.
Finally, try to avoid the subway during rush hour (roughly 7–9 AM and 6–7:30 PM) if you’re carrying large luggage.
This is really important.
Seoul's subways get absolutely PACKED during rush hour. You won't be able to move, and you might not even be able to get onto the subway with your luggage.
One of the biggest mistakes first-time visitors make is assuming they need to stay near major attractions.
In reality, Seoul’s subway system connects the city extremely well. Even neighborhoods that seem far away are often only 20–30 minutes apart by train.
This means travelers can often save money on hotels by staying in areas like Hongdae or Dongdaemun and still reach places like Myeongdong or Gangnam very easily.
